Justice Reimagined: How Cannabis Has Been Used as Tool for Oppression
Niambe McIntosh, executive director of the Peter Tosh Estate, joined the Marijuana Policy Project’s July 2020 virtual event “Reimagining Justice: Race, Cannabis & Policing.” She shared the story of her brother Jawara McIntosh, who suffered a traumatic brain injury while jailed in 2017 on a first-time cannabis possession charge, and spoke about the police harassment her father faced for his cannabis advocacy.
Across four panels, speakers from the cannabis industry, faith communities, civil-rights law and law enforcement discussed how racism shaped cannabis prohibition and how legalization, expungement and policing reform could help reverse those harms.
